The only purpose is to pay me so I can do the things I enjoy in life.
This resonates so hard. I clawed my way into consulting and put it on a pedestal. Now that I’m here, I feel like everything is solved with a handful of cookie cutter solutions and no real impact is made. I thought I would have more opportunity to really think creatively and solve complex problems but that has not been the case
I was yearning to go into consulting when I was around your age. I landed in PE consulting for 2 years and hated it. I felt like we were a lot of hot air and not making much impact because I never got to see through the execution of our projects/strategies. I moved into corporate finance since then and love it. You should think about what exactly in consulting you don’t enjoy and what is your own definition of purpose.
You are so young! By all means go back to school if you want to. You don’t even have to quit work to start doing that, unless you have the means to do it. Sometimes local community colleges will offer classes in various different career areas that you may want to explore.
One other thought is that you can find a hobby that has meaning. use the funds from your job to help your hobby. For example, I do animal rescue.
one other thought is to look for the good things that our company does for communities around the world. There are philanthropic endeavors.
Hi!
Being 27 makes you have soooooo many years of career in front of you :)
You’ve already received quite a number of comments so here’s what I would suggest:
get specific about what about your work makes you feel like your work isn´t purposeful and/or meaningful? Has it always been these way since you’ve joined consulting?
How could you potentially create more purpose in your work for yourself?
Also, think about what concretely would purposeful & meaningful work look like to you? In consulting but also outside of it?
Answering these questions is a good start to get some additional perspective. Based on your answers, think about what do you <want> to do to create such work for yourself?
Wish you all the best!
Btw, if you’d like to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI.
I´m a Career Coach, happy to offer additional insights.
