Teach students how to read with a wonder and curiosity by teaching them the three big questions from Beers and Probst’s books. What surprises me? What has changed, challenged or confirmed my thoughts/ideas? What does the author assume I know? It allows all students to enter any text and engage with it.
I use Newsela. The articles aren't excessively long, on a digital format the kids can highlight, annotate, and learn new vocabulary. I generally share my screen and do one with them to show them what to do.
Annotate the text highlighting key events that drive the narrative in fiction or supporting details that develop the main idea in non-fiction.

ActivelyLearn is good also for annotating. It asks questions in the margins, tailored to standards, that students can answer.
