Does anyone have any personal financial planning/advisory experience and would be willing to share their insight into the career? I am currently an experienced associate specializing in private company audits but have always wanted to help people save/grow their money. If you have worked in this area, what is the job like? Work/life balance, overall satisfaction, and comp?

I don’t, but I do know a lot of regional firms have a guy or two that does this (CPA with PFS) and they seem to do fairly well in life. Could be a way to stay close to the industry and achieve your goals.

I’ve watched a few people make this switch and boomerang back after spending time at places like northwestern mutual, Mutual of Omaha, Edward Jones etc. Common thread from all of them is not liking the focus on sales / cold calling that goes into building a client group

Might try something like becoming a Dave Ramsey financial advisor or do some volunteer work in this area to get a feel for it before a full scale transition. Very hard to make a switch to FT bc it’s likely based on commission or assets managed and you’re somewhat conflicted and really selling some form of insurance rather than pure advising. So depends on what you want to do.

I work in the financial industry and would be happy to discuss it with you. I came from a public accounting, corporate audit, private industry accounting, then Corp Compliance career to doing his and I love it. Please PM me. Thanks.

I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!
