I started one day a week where I’d either go out for a walk or just do something indoors, read a book, get out some craft stuff. I really almost have to force myself at first, but after a while it becomes a habit and I look forward to it. I do still have the majority of days where I beeline to the couch and watch tv, just not everyone now.
Ah okay that’s a good idea thank you! I always try and do as many hobbies as I can but never finish any projects!
What helped me at first was shrinking the goal. 10 mins of movement or hobby time right after work, before the couch swallows me. So a walk, just dance with my kiddo, or even a youtube workout. Also, stack it with something enjoyable like a podcast + walk. It’s less about discipline, more about sneaky routines.
I’m always so bad at starting small- it’s a great idea to shrink the goal and build it up as I go along!
It's not exactly earth shattering stuff, but I ultimately realized that the only way I'm going to be consistent about working out is if I do it first thing in the morning. By the time 5:30 PM rolls around, I have no energy left for anything, much less going to the gym. If I'm going to work out, it's got to be before work. I started small with just 30 minute weight lifting sessions, then gradually started adding in cardio after. I have to wake up even earlier now to fit it all in, but it's absolutely worthwhile if you can stick to it. I feel so much sharper mentally when I get a workout in before my work day starts.
How do you get the mentality to wake up earlier! I snooze as much as I can until I have to get out of bed for work!
Totally get this—I feel like all my energy goes into work, and by the time I’m home, I’m running on empty. What’s helped a bit is starting small: a 10-minute walk, a quick stretch, even just picking up a hobby once a week. Keeping it low-pressure makes it easier to stick with, and weirdly, doing something helps me feel less drained in the long run.
Yes I agree- sometimes I have a hobby that I can’t wait to get home for- like reading a book or finish some artwork
I feel the same way. I watch way too much TV. I am working overseas, and walk a lot, take lots of stairs during the day, and sometimes its plenty of physical activity. But, while my legs are getting stronger, my arms feel week! So I am going to use resistance bands so I don't have to get heavy weights, and right now I do not have money for a gym. A suggestion is to do some squats while watching TV, maybe at least during commericals. The thing is, when I take breaks at work or home, I walk. And my goals are super simple and rediculously small. But, that way you start small, take small steps and build on that.
That’s a great idea, getting the lift at work is always so tempting but I try and take the stairs as much as possible! I always check my step count at the end of the day also.
That a good idea about the walks during breaks- I always feel so sluggish after eating and after sitting down for an hour on my phone.
Yes! I just told my sister when I get home from the trip that I leave for Thursday, I am going to come home and make an effort to work out every day. I have a Peloton in my house so I have no excuse not to use it. I think I just get so tired sitting at a desk all day and then when I come home I just want to kick my shoes off and relax honestly.
Yes I agree! I think you can maybe make a rough schedule- what’s days you will exercise and then the others will be the well deserved rest!
