Pay to submit, pay to attend, pay for the trophy.
Countin’ your chickens?
You have to pay but they’ll let the winners know if they won ahead of time (so you don’t waste the money if you aren’t winning).
Oh, you sweet summer child.
Your agency pays for the entry. Rest assured If you win the agency will pay for your ECD, CCO, account lead, the head of finance, and a couple of the CCO's inner circle favorites to go to the awards show. 😂 But don't worry, you'll get to see all the frivolities on the company linkedIn and Instagram pages! (And if you're lucky they might remember to put your name on the credits - at the bottom.)
You gotta pay to play.

You always pay
Awww. Cute question. Everyone has to pay.
If your agency has a One Club membership—depending on the membership—there are discounts for ceremony tickets, etc.
Have to pay for Clios.
Some shows comp/discount tickets for finalists and jurors. Fewer and fewer though…
Nothing matters. Just lie and saw you won something.
Have won in a few different award shows over the years but have yet to attend 🙄

It’s all pay to play.
You have to pay every time. Agencies are corporate sponsors so they have a few spots to attend. It usually goes to the Execs who want to schmooze. Very rarely below ECD level unless the agencies actually care about the future of the creative department and the people breaking themselves for it.
Also, dolla dolla bill y’all. How do you think this pageantry perpetuates itself?
This might seem silly but I always assumed that advertising award shows were like the Oscar’s where the winners don’t know until the day of during the ceremony.
Some awards secretly/not secretly let the winners know they're getting a gong, without telling them the level. It's a great way to increase the attendance numbers.

My agency paid to send me to the One Show and Cannes Lions when I was a Senior Art Director. It was not cheap. But I haven’t gone back to any of them in a long time, even after winning. As it would have to come out of my pocket. They are being extra stingy now.
You pay.
