Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks

Your best bet is to go become a BA somewhere. I don’t hire product managers unless they have ba experience
Yeah, that makes sense. Strategy consulting to product management is the dumbest transition.
I was also in the same position. When transitioning to product, I thought it would be an easy transition based on my tech consulting experience, but that was not the case and entry level roles were limited.
After receiving a lot of rejections, I did a product management course to see if that would help. Luckily, I received a job offer from one of the sponsoring companies.
It is definitely possible though, I think it depends on the hiring company, what type product role you are interested in and how you can demonstrate product experience on your CV and during interviews. As you will be competing with candidates that have worked in product as well since the job market is tough at the moment
Good luck!
I contradict against the person that said they don't hire pms unless they have a BA as that's a very constricting way of approaching to hiring PMs.
I was also in a very similar scenerio as you-- I also was a software development consultant that was laid off in 2020. I had a break for like 6 months-- during this time I focused on building out a web product of my own that was able to get around 50k people and 1k paying users organically-- I used this web product as experience and it was enough to land me several interviews and at last an offer as everything I learned in building out my product is basically product management in a nutshell-- from rolling out features, planning features, monitoring analytics, user feedback, customer support, UI/UX, etc.. on top of that there was revenue-- recurring through monthly subscribers.
If you want to go into product and have no previous experience-- building out a product and serving to live users is your best bet..
In terms of finding specifically entry level product roles-- I built a small tooll like 2 yrs ago that helps in finding the right roles: https://www.careerflo.co/
