I used to think it was an asset but now I think it’s a distraction unless you hold a c-level title
I went through it: I would get contacted for speaking opportunities, messages on LI to connect/network, etc. but I didn’t find opportunities to learn something new or grow my skillset. I found it opens opportunities but it doesn’t help you grow - and with the time spent doing those things (being known out there), it distracted me from being better at what I do.
So, it’s great if you’re managing a large team and you don’t actually need skills to do the work. It’s not great if you need skills and your value comes from knowing how to do things. It’s especially not great if you’re in analytics/tech/AI and you’re always out there. This is how I know you can’t be that good at what you do.
If you have a family or kids, and you’re still out there, you simply don’t have time to also get better at your craft.
How do you grow your following from the start?
