Doing lateral interviews and have a screener scheduled with a firm — before law school I used to be a paralegal in one of their regional offices in a different practice group. Would it be worthwhile to reach out to the partner I used to work with before the screener? It was a lifetime ago, I haven’t been in contact with this partner in a while and I’m now in a very different practice group so I’m not sure how this would work and what I would even say

Why not? It’s not going to be held against you and it can be a difference maker. But only if you actually had some form of relationship. Not like “oh I saw X in the hallway.” No, you two need to have worked together.

If they liked you, it makes sense. I’ve seen people move mountains for former employees even if they want to go to a different group/office.

like

Yeah why wouldn’t you? It probably won’t matter for your interview but it’s a fun anecdote and shows you know the firm well

like

Yeah, why wouldn't you? Unless you sucked, it seems like a no brainer to use your own network.

like

No. Only do that if you’ve kept in touch.

Do you have mapped-out plan for pivoting? Do you intend to become a first-year family law attorney?

Anyone in transaction advisory? Looking to talk

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes? Or had it disclosed to them?

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.

Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
