There’s a danger in being “too much” of a SME. You can work yourself into a situation where you are essentially a single point of failure AKA irreplaceable. You’ll get passed over time and again once that starts happening.
Spot on- be too good / invaluable, you’ll be too valuable to ever promote from that role you’re in. A true victim of your own success

I disagree strongly that it’s about how long you’ve been around. I do think that often people who are the best at storytelling and selling their ideas get ahead in this field - even more than people who can actually deliver but don’t excel at the self promotion and story telling side.
Exactly! Being a leader is a different skill set. In fact, insisting that they're not knowledgeable misses the point. If you want to be a leader you need to learn some new skills.
I think that depends. I recently was told I wasn't getting the promotion I believed I deserved, spending 3 years at this company. I also have almost 10 years of experience working in the tech industry. The people who I work with don't have a tech background but somehow have higher titles than me.
On the outside, it just seems like my experience should trump every one else. However, some companies value "strategy" because they are in a growth phase and want people who can come up with innovative ideas instead of just doing things quickly and correctly.
All in all, I think it's the company you work for and if you bring what they are looking for.
It is about who you know as well. If you are good at building relationships with people and are able to use that network to gain exposure to different areas, you can use it to grow your career.
