Feeling lost traction after completing a state appellate court clerkship. Former V100 transactional attorney trying to pivot into litigation. Is it that the litigation market is less active at this moment or are firms just stopped looking for lateral associates who are not straight from another comparable firm/federal clerkship? Would be grateful for people’s thoughts.

As a former Big Law litigator, I don’t recall the firm hiring state appellate court clerks. It did hire clerks from the highest state courts, or from Delaware.

See if you can make a substantive connection between the cases you saw as a clerk and the firm’s cases. Perhaps white collar practices might benefit from your expertise.

Smaller firms/boutiques that practice in state courts may be promising leads. Criminal appeals or immigration habeas practices may also be a good match: https://www.reddit.com/r/publicdefenders/s/6mRWIdO9VG

There also may be good jobs within the state court system, or you could consider applying to clerk at the NY Court of Appeals.

Try and do a federal clerkship before heading back to a firm. I’ve seen that path work

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!

I’m a first year associate (almost second year). I work at a national firm and I’m not a litigator. When I started with the firm, I was told I could work out of any office. Long story short, I regret choosing the office that I chose. I’d like to transfer to another office - is that a difficult ask? I’m licensed in the state I’d like to transfer to. I don’t know how to make this request.
