First in house role from biglaw. In the screener I mistakenly said a rather low number that’s actually 50k below my comfort number (and close to my psychological floor) for a role with no advertised band. Beating myself up for the slipping tongue. Is it rude or crazy to pretend the first number never existed in the pre-offer salary discussion round? How should I approach this?

You can always negotiate when you get offer

If you make it to the next round I would just ask if they have a compensation range level. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bring up your number again until asked. Even if they didn’t post their band, they know what they are willing to do.

like

If you get to the offer stage, tell them circumstances have changed because of XYZ

like

Are there any circumstances from that screener that you could use as justification for the low number? "Oh, when I said I wanted X-$50K, that was assuming a 20 hour workweek."

Unfortunately, you have likely lowered their expectations to the first number, and if you change that number , they will still focus their efforts on candidates within the first range. If the higher number is the real number, they will probably pick a different candidate.

like

Oh ok I was hoping not having to repeat the original number or sound defensive. But yeah good point that they might go to their second-preferred candidates.

Please help. I’ve moved up the ranks pretty quickly at the company I work for to become a Principal SE. Coming from 4th year law firm litigation experience in a variety of areas but mostly data breach, e-discovery, breach of K.
