Create a policy in the firm of no gifts. We told our employees that we partners give “gifts” in the form of year end bonuses and they should not get us gifts. Such a relief. Some give gifts to each other but we don’t give or receive gifts from associates or staff. We’re generous with bonuses and our employees know that.
This is such a good policy. I hated trying to figure out what to get my boss. It was always a guess of “well, how much will my bonus be because that’s what I’m using to buy everyone Christmas presents at the firm.”
I give to my secretary every year. I’m not sure of the firm policy. Each year, on the day of our holiday party, I give her a card. There is cash with the card. I have a lot more to my former, long-term assistant. Her successor is new and far less good. I give her a lot less.
Amazon gift cards. Very easy to actually spend, plus you can set a denomination based on how much you like the person.
My old firm avoided all that with a rule that the only gifts would be ‘Secret Santa’ ones with no one spending more than £5 per item. Each person secretly draws out of a hat a piece of paper with a colleague’s name written on it, then has to buy and wrap for that colleague a low cost gift under the limit. The buyer has to keep secret whose name was on the paper. When all gifts have been bought, there’s an all staff meeting held and each person takes turn to present his or her gift to the named recipient. Not only are many of the gifts amusing, but it is amazing how cheaply you can buy something fun or interesting.
I do Amazon cards and vary the amount by person, support level, etc. I also give books to the son of my most key paralegal. He thinks Santa is part librarian lol
