If you don’t mind the taxes and high COL, California is still the best.
Otherwise, Austin, Houston, and Miami are all good options for young folks.
I’m from Tampa. Been in Santa Monica the last 5 years and can’t wait to move back. Wouldn’t trade my time here for anything, but the taxes / CoL in CA no longer offset the weather for me - which is the primary thing CA has over FL, imo.
Plus, Tampa has Cigar City and Brew Bus!

Texas is a bit of a mess rn...
Used to live in texas and have excessive fear for family who still lives there due to idiocy. Unbiased opinion with inside knowledge and yes it's a cluster.

You already mentioned taxes, but just remember that CA taxes are no joke (13% on top of very high CoL). I live in CA and generally like it but am thinking about leaving soon, mostly because the taxes are so ridiculous.
Yeah would be a huge eye opener for me coming from Ohio lol

SoCal, hands down.
Just remember, if you pick FL, you'll realize Florida Man truly does exist.

Maybe LA? Better dating scene, and a short drive to SD and a longer drive to SF as another option.

Santa Monica isn’t terrible as a dude. It’s no NYC though where a guy can majorly date up with relative ease.
I'm from Texas and the gulf coast is pretty sad excuse for a beach. I lived in San Diego for a year and it was incredible. However, becuase of covid it's hard to make a case for SD b/c the value is in the people you meet and hangouts (but Torrey Pines is absolutely incredible - I think they just renovated but pretty sure they're open, give them a call). That being said, will things open up in 6 months and are you willing to wait? Up to you to decide. If you wanna hedge your bets, Austin is a great choice.
No doubt good advice - Torrey pines as in the golf course? place is majestic. I would be looking to move in 4 months or so
If you can afford the taxes, California.
Florida is too hot/humid for year round fun.
Texas can be similar but also takes forever to leave the state😂
Takes forever figuratively as well as literally if you are driving
I’m in Tampa, came down from NYC ~2 years ago and certainly no regrets other than wishing we won these last 2 championships outside of covid restrictions
Also California you can ski only an hour away as I would miss some of that environment if I did choose texas or Florida
Beach rules out Texas, you're left with FL and CA. CA is incredibly expensive, FL is much more affordable, although Miami Beach night life is definitely more expensive than CA or NYC.
If the pay is the same, I'd personally go to Miami, but if you can get a COL adjustment, San Diego hands down.
I'm a Houstonian and Texan but Galveston doesn't meet the standards of an actual beach for non-Texans. Lol
Florida
Go Santa Monica dog
Big Texas fan here, but our “beaches” suck. You can catch a quick, cheap flight to a real beach, but if that’s high on the list I think FL is the better option.
This is the way, just bought a RT flight to Miami in April for $100 on United.
