No one will ever remember you working on your vacation except you
☝️ this. Shut it off. Nothing is that important or that someome else cant handle. This goes for all levels. If its narnia info only you have they will call. You also shouldnt be on FB on vaykay. Disconnect and recharge, you can do it!
No one will die if you don’t look at your email while on vacation. If you have coverage, don’t feel guilty. Replying to email on vacation sets AWFUL precedence
Just remind yourself: it’s only advertising. We’re not saving lives here
Hell no. Set an automatic ooo reply with the name of the person who is covering you.
It’s PR, not the ER, y’all. No one’s ever gonna die over anything we do or don’t do. There’s always tomorrow, and there’s always someone who can fill in when you’re not there. We’re literally ALL replaceable, so finding coverage when we take the PTO we’ve earned and deserve is something the rest of the team just has to work out. But echoing what everyone else said: turn your OOO on, and turn your notifications off. I’m about to delete my gmail app entirely as I embark on my 2 week vacay.
If an organisation can’t run for a few days without a junior member of staff replying to an email while on holiday, then that organisation is set up terribly
Someone smart recently told me “if you don’t respect your time off, who will?” There’s always going to be a reason to feel work guilt. Resist!
If you died the project would go on. Remember that. The agency nor the client will stop doing business with you gone.
While I respect the above comments about unplugging and certainly agree that it is necessary for your mental health to detach from work when you have every resource to successfully do so, I understand why people DO feel a need to check email on vacation. Especially when you are junior and feel the pressure as a gatekeeper for day to days. I am not junior and still check emails grazingly when OOO because i find it overwhelming to catch up on everything at once. It’s acting on/responding to emails while out that enables the situation though. I hope your manager is supportive enough to say the same!
^ I totally understand checking emails in an effort to alleviate the pressure of a flooded inbox when you’re back...I do that ALL the time. Like. Way more often than I ever should. I’m horrible at taking my own advice when it comes to disconnecting, which is why I plan on taking such drastic measures this vacation lol.
But I think it’s really important to set boundaries to maintain some semblance of a work/life balance. If you do your job well, and you properly plan for your vacations (i.e. write detailed handovers, ensure all your tasks are completed before you leave, etc), you shouldn’t feel guilty about taking time off.
SVP3, you haven't fully trained this client + over emphasized to them how you'll be out and who's covering for you. Meanwhile, when they text you regardless, wait 3-4-5 hours, then text back sticking to the script 10%. "Hey X, just seeing your msgs. I'm out of the office on vacation till Date, but feel free to email John who's covering in my absence and he'll be happy to help! I look forward to catching up when I'm back in the office" STICK TO THE SCRIPT, NEVER BUDGE. Be very direct and clear while polite, short, and sweet.
I delete my inbox from my phone on vaca to reduce the temptation to check. Coverage is there for a reason!
It’s up to you to set boundaries. Have your out of office response on and don’t check.
Hell no. OOO auto response and then I turn off my email on my phone.
Who are you, the president? There are no emergencies in our business... leave em alone and don’t check again
What happens when your client has your cell phone and then texts you?! 🤮😭
I do. Then get shit from people for doing it - even when they start with “I’m sorry to interrupt your PTO but...”. Then you are not allowed to give me shot later for answering emails on my PTO day.
I heard a great piece of advice from a C suite executive who said if you start to respond to emails etc when you say you’re off people will assume that’s the norm for you. So be very clear about setting the boundary. Before you go make sure your work is covered, things are deputized as needed, but stick to it being off.
If you respond to emails on PTO you are setting a terrible precedent for yourself. Do not do it. Put up your OOO and call it a day.
