I think there are a lot of Americans that over time start negotiating for additional vacation (e.g. if a company starts you with 2 weeks they negotiate for 3 or 4.). But the concept of getting like 6-8 weeks of vacation is rare enough here that I don’t think we even consider it.
That’s so sad you have to negotiate for even a little time off, crazy how it’s not just more by default.
I think the culture is different and it's hard to get annoyed when you genuinely have never experienced otherwise. It would be GREAT to have more time off, for sure, but I wholeheartedly enjoy my job, and even if we exhaust our PTO, they still allow us to take unpaid leave. So, it works.
That’s true I guess if you’ve never experienced it it’s hard to even put yourself in those shoes.
I have seen comments online from americans along the lines of "well some of us actually WORK for a living" when finding out 6+ weeks vacay is the minimum in some countries. Americans can be our own worst enemy sometimes.
Yeah I think sometimes people can get defensive because it helps them feel better which makes sense but it should be an outrage!
It does get under our skin, a lot. There are some of us in our industry who are working to make more time away possible. And there are many who are working against it. I think unions are helpful organizations that need to be strengthened in our industry - they are a key lever for things like this.
Yeah I think you guys get some better production unions which is great, hopefully you can leverage those to your advantage!
