I was hired opportunistically as I needed to relocate to another market due to spouse’s new job. Old firm was extremely supportive but couldn’t keep me remote, and did not have an office in the new market. A few partners reached out to partners at new firm on my behalf, and was hired within a month.
Got in my current firm this way. Friend submitted referral application, screener next week, callbacks scattered over the next 2 weeks, miscellaneous discussion with HR and firm counsel over the next week, offer call shortly post the 1-month stamp.
That actually sounds pretty fast for a role that wasn't already approved.

It is truly impossible to generalize anyone’s timeline to anyone else’s. Every firm and group is different, and the same group is different month to month.

In my group, we sometimes hire in hours and sometimes in weeks 🤷♀️ depends on who is involved and the need

Can you explain what you mean by opportunistic
There is no posted role, and you reached out to the firm asking if they would consider you anyway and basically create a position for you
