I've taken some BDRs that have wanted to be technical and trained them up to be Sales Engineers.
Some look at Account Management and Customer Success as well. Others stay on the job for years and aim for a management role (BDR/SDR Management, Team Leadership)
It really depends on what interests you. That is where having career conversations with your supervisor comes in, they can help you grow skills for what ever position you might be interested in. Recently one of our BDRs moved to a marketing role.
@an Associate - as a BDR, I presume you've been focused on getting the meeting. As an AE, you now have to figure out the politics of an organization, what the Competition is up to, you need to develop a Champion, you need to be able to meet with the Executive Sponsor and present the quantifiable business value that your product/service will deliver uniquely, you will need to figure out the Decision Process and the Decision Criteria and move them in your favor. If you like that kind of challenge, AE is for you. If not, a support role is probably best.
