Yes, it's both great exposure to how PE works and how they think, as well as an excellent segue to an actual operating role in a PE-backed portfolio company. I had a great experience and then was able to land a senior portco role, so would have zero hesitation making that decision to leave consulting again (especially given current state of that industry).
The major watch out is that I don't view PE ops as a terminal position where you can keep climbing the ranks (unless you are an experienced exec coming in as an operating partner). It is a great role for some number of years, but if you are coming from consulting it is likely a better stepping stone to a senior portco operating role.
The other thing to keep in mind is that PE ops teams vary dramatically in how they are structured and how investors at the firm view the team, so I hesitate to say my experience is broadly applicable. You need to do significant diligence on the team/firm you would be joining
Very helpful thank you
