For those who have taken a class year cut, how do the other associates know that you’re a year below your graduation year? If your firm bio says that you graduated from law school in 2022, is there a way for other associates to know that you are actually operating as a 3rd year?

No i don't think they do

Why are you trying to “get away” with doing lower level work? If you’re getting too much of a stretch assignment you should be forthcoming that you lack experience. Otherwise fake it til you make it. Lots of 2nd years would kill to do more interesting 4th year work. Everyone has a first time sometime.

At my firm it says everyone’s class year in outlook

like

Right, so actual class year

At my firm it says everyone’s class year vs firm recognized class year in our internal database I use to find rates and build budgets

like

I think they’d know when you’re staffed. A lot of folks lateral to us and drop class years when retooling/pivoting. Someone from my law school class year was staffed with me and I was told they would be under me as they took a haircut

like

At KE they had an internal list of associates that were listed based on deemed class year

How do you manage competing interests during a singing or closing? I’m working on a closing scheduled for this week (obviously everything needs to be done asap) and while I’ve told folks on my other deals that this closing is very busy, I’ve gotten really snarky responses and have been told that I’m taking too long to respond to stuff that (in my opinion) is not urgent on these other deals. Everyone seems to think that their task is more important than an actual closing. Advice?

About to finish my first year. I’m a specialist. Only going to hit 65% of my hours (took a 4 week vacation cause of wedding/hm).

I never say no to work and i have fantastic reviews, and the head of my practice (with whom I work a lot for) has great things to say about me.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Considering lateraling to a bigger firm that pays closer to market or market. I really like my current firm and coworkers and WLB, but I am being underpaid. Based on conversations with my PG leader and supervising partner, I might make NEP/Counsel this year or next. How do you go about asking what the pay bump for that is? If it’s sizable I might just stay.
