Umm just built a solid operating model instead of meds
Ummmm they’ve probably done so their whole lives.
It makes a huge difference. I would have been fired by now without meds dopamine hits.
My teen is on atomoxetine and I’d like to pull him off. He doesn’t focus at all in school anyway so I feel like it’s not worth the risk and maybe a short acting stimulant would help him get through the toughest homework times.
Wellbutrin helped my ADHD. Unfortunately, it also can lower seizure thresholds, and my doctors determined that was causing my seizures. Now I’m not on anything except anti seizure meds and caffeine.
Hugely helpful. I take Ritalin long acting.
Diagnosed and started medication 3 years ago.
At the time I was being micromanaged and struggling with performance.
4 days into taking medication, my SM said, “really great job this week. Something has clicked for you. Keep doing what you’re doing”.
It was focus. I could pick a thing to do, and do it, for the first time ever. Prior to medication, there’s no way I’d be able to get anything done in a 15 minute window. I’d end up just flicking between tabs and windows and emails the whole time.
With medication, it’s like it creates a tunnel of focus where I can pick a thing and just do that, and my attention doesn’t get pulled by all the other things. The other things are still there, but they don’t highjack my thoughts.
You dont need ADHD meds if you've made it this far without them.
Just being real
Dextroamphetamine salts (adderall) 10mg BID. 35yo f 5’4 145. Huge help to even start organizing your mind. Similar to all these meds that people are taking for weight loss, you have to put in the “exercise” as well.
Make a plan that answers the questions: what am I trying to fix? When am I most motivated throughout the day? How will I know I am successful? Who do I trust to give me honest feedback if I seem sad/angry/emotionally affected by the meds? Be aware, it will take a little bit to find a doc you like, get on the meds, test them out, etc. It’s like any implementation: you can put the new tool in place, but if you don’t learn how to use it, it doesn’t matter that you changed from the old system.
Vyvanse, time release. I take it as needed rather than daily. It was even more useful once I learned that Vitamin C can "turn off" the effects of the meds, so I can keep my sleep schedule steady even on days I take meds.
Funny cuz when I wasn’t on meds vitamin C is what I used to make more dopamine fun science hack - lots of orange juice lol, so check your old habits when switching to a new system
I take XR 10 mg adderall, and I also have quick release 5 mg that I don’t really use. I only take meds on the week days and try to only use it 3 times a week or on heavy meeting days.
It’s very helpful for work calls, and it does help me cute thru the noise and complete tasks start to finish. BUT, the 10 mg makes me extremely irritable, and anxious. It also low key makes me sweat and smell. I tend hit my high around 9:30 am and text like every person I’ve ever met, lol.
I’ve started to just use the 5 mg and see if it works better for me.
Other options are Wellbutrin, which is an anti depressant but ppl like it (makes me too anxious) and straterra.
If you don’t struggle with anxiety then maybe it will be fine! Everyone’s different!
Id also suggest this in the ADHD professionals bowl!!
Vyvanse - you’ll feel exhausted and muscles may ache for a few weeks but you’ll be focused / I only take it ni during high stress periods
I have taken adderall xr since high school and it is amazingly helpful. the only issue I have is I forget to eat / am not hungry / food sounds gross so a big breakfast + protein + good dinner sets me up for success
