From big company to startup — is being the sole in-house lawyer worth it? I’ve been thinking about the jump from a large F100 company to a startup where I’ll be the only counsel. The autonomy and impact sound exciting, but the lack of support and structure feels risky. For those who’ve made this move (or hired for it), what surprised you the most, and would you do it again?

What year are you? I’m a 7th year and mostly autonomous in my role at a small company (not a start up but it got bought out by PE 5 years ago after being somewhat mismanaged for like 95 years so it has a start-up feel), but I like having a GC above me. Maybe in a few years I’d be comfortable being in charge.

Thanks! Title and comp are better, stability is hard to assess now and my current job is very stable I can see myself here in another 5-10 years with no substantial changes

In my experience it becomes a personality fit more than a skillset fit. If you are really good at advocating and being persuasive and internal stakeholders are people who are going to listen to you and not treat you like a cost center, great. I've heard people who have gotten crazy good situations.

From other people who have had bad experiences, they've rough time getting processes set up, lack of company buy in, and the 'start up' mentality can be really rough hours wise.

Thanks for sharing, much appreciated!

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission?
