Administrative assistants -- or secretaries, or office managers, or whatever you want to call us -- are the backbone of any company's administration. The fact that you have had several interviews in an area with a relatively stagnant economy is testament that the jobs are out there. The last time I was in between jobs was when I was 45. Nobody will admit that they are looking for a 25-year-old they can mold into their own image, but then they don't really have to say it, do they? After a similar experience to yours, I told my current boss that I was doing this job -- and doing it well -- before most of the other applicants were even born. I told him he could hire Miss Kappa Delta of 2000 and be looking for a replacement in three years when she either bags a wealthy doctor, lawyer or banker and stays home to spend his money or gets a better paying job elsewhere or he could hire someone with roots in this community who still has a good 20-plus years of gas in her tank with no plans to go anywhere. I told the boss that my intention is for the next job I get to be my last job before retirement, and health-issues aside, that wouldn't be for 20-25 years. I got the job and have been hitting on all cylinders for the past 20 years. Retirement is on the horizon, but I haven't gotten there yet. I would advise against accusing the company of ageism, but touting the benefits of work experience and life experience is a valid argument for older workers to use.
Ageism is a very real thing. But the problem is that it's virtually impossible to prove it as no one will admit to it. The fact that you got some interviews is encouraging, however. Just hang in and stay persistent, if things pick up in the new year you'll be positioned to find something.
I am 46 and starting to feel the same way. I am in St. Louis, MO but I am looking for something also.
I am in Slidell so I understand exactly what you are talking about. I am almost 41 and am dealing with the same exact thing. I have applied to so many positions only I haven't received any calls for interviews. I have 20 years of administrative experience some of which was Office Management and General Manager of a company and still nothing. I hope you finally find the "YES" you are looking for. Good Luck
For me after 15 year's of my life full of dedication towards my job and its my first love my company terminate me and give me 21 days for Searching new one,no one hire me because i m 41 now, they admits that i m best ever staff but still terminate me.
After a very long career as a Legal Administrative Assistant, I took some time off and now I want to get back in the game. I am 68 years old and still have the ability to work and very fluent in my abilities. However, I do not want to work in the legal field again. My question is; How do I get myself back to work at this stage of my life?
I went through the same exact thing last few months of 2024. So I’m giving it a little rest. I’ll start back up looking after bonus time. That’s when a lot of people leave or change jobs. So there will be plenty of positions out there. Linked in has a lot of hybrid and remote positions. Good luck!
Hang in there. It's just a down market. I've had to take mediocre roles just to pay the bills, but I don't list those on the resume. Just add it to your experience. Have had several interviews with CEO levels only to be told they hired internally, These are protocols many companies follow. You worth is your experience stay positive.!
civil service interview coming up as administrative officer
I'm in the same boat as you. I have a degree in office administration but yet I have not been able to use it. I graduated in 2019 and I'm now currently 47 going to be 48 in april. Nobody will hire me. I don't even know how many applications and cover letters I have thrown out there and I've literally had one interview in the last 6 months. It's frustrating. I can potentially lose my apartment. My 17 year old daughter has moved out of the house and with her dad because of my financial situation. It's just absolutely frustrating and depressing as hell because I'm trying so hard and not getting anywhere.
