Going on 5 years with a Florida firm (construction defect litigation), insurance defense. I love my firm, the people I work with, & the flexibility I’m provided (remote option, no set hours, average billables, on partner track), but I cannot stand insurance defense. I went to law school because I wanted to serve the underprivileged, but I also have loans. I have done the math and cannot afford to live on a nonprofit position that pays $50-60k a year. How do I get out?

You could try to join a non-profit board. I’m in house in pharma (at a specialized rare disease company though so not big pharma) and I’m also on the board of a non-profit. It does great work and fills my cup.

Save a lot to cover difference if you can before the move.

I don’t know that you would be able to feed yourself or a family working at a non-profit, but perhaps you can work at a non-profit over the weekends or evenings during your spare time?

How about taking pro bono cases with nonprofit while financially supporting yourself through your current job? If there is an option to do so. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that the work we do is for the good too and not just for the money. But it's hard with all the student loans waiting to be paid. Good luck!

Do you all write cover letters for job apps (where they require one) like how you would write an ‘our understanding’ section of a proposal to a client? I.e. some soulful understanding of the hiring firm’s place in the universe, reasoning of what their needs are to succeed and put them in a position of greatness etc, and why you are uniquely qualified?

Or just keep it simple?

HR is asking me to expect something on top of the current offer I am holding.

The opening is for L8. How much offer I should expect from mastercard??

I had a panel interview two weeks ago. I sent the recruiter a status check email last Friday and haven't heard back. I'm really interested in this company and still see the role posted on their site. I'd like to send another email today (to the hiring mgr and recruiter) reiterating my interest along with a list of references. Thoughts on sending the references without them asking? I don't do well with panel interviews and I'm hoping they look past that and check my references.

From what I understand, ethics is separate from legal. Legal violations have consequences, ethical violations don’t. What’s the point of ethics if there are no consequences? Sure when it’s convenient to be ethnical, everyone will be. It only matters when it’s not convenient. So should there be ethics set up with consequences like loss of job that applies evenly for everyone in the company including the CEO? Should their be financial consequences set up for smaller violations?
