I’m a huge fan of BA Avios for AA domestic flights.
Yep, BA Avios is the best deal out there for MR points
Not Delta! That’s the worst!
You can also directly buy airline tickets with the points via the AMEX website. That’s not always a great redemption value, but it’s essentially a cash ticket and therefore doesn’t have the capacity caps that miles use can, so worth at least pricing that first before you elect to transfer the points to an airline.
Also, consider retail partners. I’ve gotten thousands of dollars of Home Depot gift certs for housework before.
Actually had great luck with this for buying tickets to Hawaii. Used their portal and got tickets on AA for 150k miles and a shorter flight vs 220k to book with Delta and have a longer flight.
Around the world ticket on ANA.
I wouldn't transfer any points until you actually have a solid plan. The biggest advantage of the transferrable points like MR is the flexibility of which program to choose. However, if you transfer the points, it can't be reversed back.
Also for some sweet spots for MR:
Short haul flights using BA avios (4.5k+; 7.5k+ in North America)
ANA First Class RT between USA and Japan using Virgin Atlantic (110k-120k)
Delta One OW between USA and Asia/Europe using Virgin Atlantic (60k; much better than using Delta miles!)
And more... Just do some research and transfer the points once you have a plan!
You can book travel through Amex.
In addition to BA Avios (like C1 said), you can look into transferring to Flying Blue (KLM/AirFrance) with the current transfer bonus and redeeming for flights on DL metal.
Don’t do Delta. Too much fees
Get the Charles Schwab Amex and transfer to money and 1 point to 1.5 cents.
I do this but most ppl don’t wanna pay the $550 annual. And it’s 1.25 conversion so 280K points = $3,500 cash in a Charles Schwab acct.
85k roundtrip business class from jfk to tokyo on ANA. 160k i think for first. i flew first and it was the best travel experience of my life
The itinerary will take you around the glob, literally. 12 segments and up to 8 stopovers are allowed.
Definitely don’t transfer to Delta. You can often transfer to Virgin to book Delta One routes for WAY less than if you were to book the flight directly thru Delta. Also look into Aeroplan and ANA for Star Alliance routes. If you play it right, you should be able to book at least 2-3 round trip international business class flights with that many Amex points. If you don’t know what you’re doing, check out juicymiles. They can help you book with points for a fee.
How do you find brokers P1?
2x points for Hilton
I’m a fan of the Schwab option if you’re risk averse.
I’ve had good experiences selling MR to mileage brokers for 1.3-1.4 cents a point, which works by you transferring miles to a mileage account (usually Aeroplan) and then they PayPal you. Usually completes within 30 minutes.
