I've had former company employees give me attitude. Look, you either left because you didn't follow company rules, or you were unhappy with company rules (yes, pay is set by company rules)
Ends up he quit without notice. Oh, and are you hiring? Yep, but you're not rehirable. Nor would I rehire you, with that attitude.
I like to tell everyone that every interaction is an interview. Treat the employee that gave you the application like crap? Yeah, they're going to tell me. Problem customer? I value my team's opinion, and my team says no job for you.

I would be fine if they just were asking "are you hiring?", but after giving my staff grief over something, then putting in an application, then acting like they were god's gift to retail, and not understanding why they weren't rehirable, and giving me even more attitude. Also, he wanted the number for HR. Yeah, buddy, that conversation is not going to go the way you think it will go.
