Got an exit at a corp that likes to call their data analysts data scientists. How can I grow into a data scientist and will this screw me over for recruiting going forward since I’m under qualified?

I deal with the business and answer questions like: why is our product sales down. Sometimes I might break out sklearn to do some clustering or some random forests.

Get a lab coat

You’ll likely get blocked from more interesting opportunities. That job wasn’t created for somebody to create their own preferred list of objectives.

I see. What’s your educational background?

Download datasets in your free time and run models on them. I don’t think forcing algorithmic approaches on “business” cases is worth your time, chasing poorly formed hypotheses or objectives can be detrimental to your understanding.

Maybe try avoiding Kaggle datasets, those don’t really require independent thinking since many of them are rigged/overly proscriptive.

Data scientist is a broad label and it does include data analysis. It’s up to the projects and work that you’re exposed to. I would say get a statistics degree or take a few courses and you’ll be well prepared for.

A bit tricky but generally, data scientist fall under 4 categories: core data scientist (ml engineer), analytics data scientist (glorified data analyst), data engineer (software engineer, data), and/or full stack data scientist (all 3 of the aforementioned). Actually a lot of companies refer to their data analysts as data scientists depending on where youre housed. If youre in the engineering group youll likely be referred to as a data scientist but if youre on a finance team you may be called a data analyst. I dont have enough info to answer completely but you arent screwing yourself, simply by putting data analyst on your resume. It could help you move towards a full stack data scientist role depending on the types of work youll do and skills youll pick up

What kinds of models can I create for low frequency businesses?

I recently switched to a startup at a data analyst role and have been teaching myself about statistics…I found survival analysis models and wanted to try and implement one to determine our customer retention rate and eventually a LTV

The business I’m in is very low frequency (most customers use our product once a year, but we do have many users) and I’m worried this will lead to poor results. What other models do…

I have a “commitment to an offer” at 150-170k from a BB. They said they can’t give me the offer until Feb/March until they ramp up their current hires and figure out their budget, but the HM said the best thing I can do is to get another offer to use as leverage.

I’m about to receive an offer from a different company at 100-115k. Would much rather work at the BB (better company/position). Is it even worth me bringing this offer to use as leverage, or is the salary discrepancy too much?

Are there any agencies where creatives actually have good work-life balance in LA, SF or anywhere else for that matter? Like no weekends or no working more than a 40-50hr week? Or do I have to go in house for this? Or do I have to leave advertising altogether?
