"Stay invisible" is just gatekeeping dressed up as mentorship. They want you quiet until they need a scapegoat. Speak up anyway
It's hard to comment without knowing more. There is a balance to doing your job, which often means staying out of the way and following instructions, while also having your voice heard. I have worked with assistants who made my job so much harder because of their desperate attempts to take over and that is not what they are hired for.
As long as you're doing your job and what you're speaking about isn't causing a ruckus then by all means continue speaking up. But you have to prioritize your job and know your place.
I wouldn’t take it too personally. Have worked with some very eccentric people that always seem to have something to say about something. Work towards your goals and be on the same page with whoever actually has a say in it. And if it was that person, they don’t sound like anyone to impress anyways.
Sometimes I think people say things like this to associates to make them feel small and intimidated. And I think they do that because they don’t want to risk being outspoken by an associate in a meeting. I recommend you keep speaking up and make a name for yourself. It is definitely not bad thing to want your voice to be heard.
