Everyone expects a little negotiation. Tell them your minimum and be prepared to walk away if they don't meet it.
Just negotiate it another $10k up.
Ask for $10k over your minimum (or more) and be prepared to walk away
The phrase “lowball” may attribute bad intent when that’s not what’s going on. (And it’s not going to help the way you perceive the whole experience, which, again, may not at all be the case.)
Instead, if you haven’t already, check the disclosed pay range for the job.
Assuming what you’re looking for is well within that range, definitely negotiate. Ask for more info about what’s driving their number (“can you help me understand what’s behind this number?”). Keep in mind that they have to navigate internal equity (what other people in same or similar role are paid).
Also, make sure you have the full comp picture, including bonus opportunity (and recent payout %s), any LTI opportunity, company match for 401(k), medical premiums, etc. It’s possible the whole shebang is closer to your existing overall comp than you think. These also offer other options like asking for a higher target bonus opportunity or extra time off allotment.
Last, the reality is that jobs have puts and takes. I could make a lot more other places but have a slew of reasons that I’ve stayed where I am (at least as of right now). If you really love the role, really vibe with the manager and team, maybe give the role more serious consideration…?
Hope this helps. Good luck! I really hope it works out and you can make the leap (if you decide it makes sense).
