I have done an excel case interview before, and for me I was given the case an hour before a scheduled time, and the first 15 minutes, I could ask the recruiter any questions. Then within the excel file of data they gave me, it had like 3 questions to answers, and you presented your findings
I’ve been an interviewer in a previous company and we did excel cases. The idea was to check if the interviewee knew the basic functions and also how they thought through questions that needed data crunching to answer. The former was never a deal breaker since that can be taught. The latter was imp e.g. of an easy question I asked - how would you identify which segment within the data the company should focus on? And the expectation would be they’d identify segment date and business outcomes data and do some filters or pivots or averageifs etc to be able to compare and come up with insights. The idea was to identify it they’re comfortable with a spreadsheet and can come up with meaningful stuff.
