Has anyone ever requested a continuance of a hearing or trial due to a planned vacation and the court declined your request? If so, how did you handle it?

I have never had a judge deny a vacation. Just point out that you scheduled the vacation before the court set the trial date. Also indicate that the vacation is paid-for and the cancellation will forfeit the money you spent. I remember a judge said once "being a lawyer is so stressful that I am not going to deny anyone's vacation". I thought that was funny. GL.

Same here. Never been denied a vacation!

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?

Let's try something: Wisdom Wednesdays. This week's topic is: advice I'd give my younger self. What's something you needed to hear as a first or second year lawyer?

For me, it's that you are in charge of your own career and no one cares about it like you do. Ask for what you want and make your own opportunities. Doing great work is a good first step, but it's not enough to really build the career you want.
