Has anyone here shifted from a chain restaurant to an independent or mom-and-pop restaurant? What was the biggest shift for you? I work at a Chili's, and I'm so done with it. I don't like the team, or even the mention of this restaurant's name at this point.. What things can I keep in mind before I take the leap?

Independent places can be hit or miss. I’ve had to fight to get paid at some places, but others will treat you like family. And I mean a fully functional and decent family.

The vibe and pace. Independent spots can feel more like family, but the workload and roles are less defined.. you wear more hats. Before jumping, visit the place a few times, ask about culture, and be ready for less structure, more freedom.

Switching into a locally owned restaurant has its benefits, but it has some drawbacks. You won’t have any of the corporate protections that you get with a chain. The pay may not be as well and I’m not sure what kind of tips you’ll get unless it’s a more high-end restaurant.

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes? Or had it disclosed to them?

I work as an AGM in a busy restaurant. Been working there for just over a year, and haven't had a single raise. I now only make 0.50 cents more than even the lowest paid shift lead but I am doing a lot more work. I'm no longer satisfied with these conditions. I have a question. I work as an assistant manager been a manager for a while worked for the company for 6 years. I know crew gets paid a dollar less than me yet a do a lot ( its part of my job ) I asked for a raise I was told wait 3 months. Waited I asked again was told I needed to do this this and that. Coustmer comes in and then ends up leaving with a grossed out look on his face just for him to put in a complaint about my appearance...he down right called me some nasty things for no reason. Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
