My husband and I are planning to retire in a few years when our kids are in early elementary school. We will definitely not home school (I think there is great value in schooling outside the home). We want to have a life where on weekdays we eat breakfast as a family, walk to/from school, help them with their homework and take them to extracurriculars, dinner together, etc. I would love to get a coast fire job at the school to cover health insurance (and i think it would be fun while not taking time from kids) but im not sure how realistic that is.
Love these ideas. Thanks for sharing
Not FIRE but coast FIRE right now with a super easy fully remote role and kids in elementary school. We always do breakfast and get ready for school together and I take them to school and pick them up. During the day I do Pilates and either walk or run, housework, errands and cooking so that after school it’s all their sports (there is something almost everyday). I volunteer a lot at the school, have lunch with them, I’ve coached their sports teams or help with practice if the coach asks parents to help with the drills. If there’s no practice we go on bike rides or play do some light sports practice at the park. I also read a lot for fun and have hobbies so my time is definitely filled up
How much are you working? I had a remote job that ended up being like 20 hrs a week but got re-orged. What’s the work culture like? Do they know you do all this or do you just do your job and be responsive and they don’t ask questions.
Would love tips on how you manage this as I feel like I can with my workload but less empowered to be away from my desk now.
And did you take a step down for an easy remote job? I wonder this same thing if I take a pay cut and it ends up being the same hours for something that’s more chill.
Not me... but IMO.
I would never home school.
(i deleted a bunch of neg stuff from my experiences that would just piss some people off)
You can easily be more 'present' for school activities, volunteering, etc. PTO/PTA, field trips, ceremonies, sports, plays/musicals, etc.
But also the majority of the time while they are in school, would allow you to do all the other things that normally take away family time after school and on the weekends.
Cooking(meal prep), cleaning, shopping, working out, DIY projects, planning trips, etc. Not having to work 8hrs a day would open a LOT more time for you to be with family even if the kids are away at school during the normal workday hours.
It also allows you time to have your own hobbies that are not directly to your children.
As a working parent, my hobby is to get my kids to/fro and to help them do their hobbies.
If I could have retired very early, or even could retire now at 50... I very likely would.

These are great questions. Thanks for asking, and I hope we get some interesting answers.
Curious about this too, do you like become the most involved parents ever lol?

Stated that way it sounds like a great retirement.
Retiring now while my kids are in elementary school would be my dream! If you can, do it! What an amazing opportunity. I am hoping to retire at 50 🤞🏻. I definitely would not homeschool but would get deeply involved in the school PTA (it’s a great way to see your kids more around the school while giving back) and they need business minded people to run a lot of their activities. And of course, you can also be ready and available for chaperoning all their field trips and attend their family mornings etc. Then school pickups and afterschool activities. There will be plenty to keep you occupied!
