I talked to my derm for a while about this and Botox. Basically, the sentiment is that topical retinol is fine.. virtually none will cross into your bloodstream from topical use, and you’re only putting it on a small portion of your skin. However - because they can’t ethically do studies to confirm how much passes to the baby and what effects it would have on them, they err on the side of caution to say no amount is considered “safe”. Until more data is available, you’ll likely see the default recommendation of no.. but opinions consider it ok so it comes down to your risk tolerance at the end of the day.
I am very risk averse and chose to use a retinol alternative in the meantime. I’m not really worried about retinol use, but I also figure it’s not really necessary for me, and there are other options.. that I could skip this one.
Don’t put it on your nipples and you’re good to go: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK501419/
And yes, my derm and OB are fine with it.
No evidence that topical application is bad and really unlikely that any amounts from topical application would cross into the bloodstream, but the risks if it does like what Accutane does to babies is horrific so I avoided
But the negative impacts of Accutane are to fetuses, not infants…
