Direct billing results in no points for room rate. Event organizers usually get free rooms/suites for the event built into the contract in exchange for no points. You can add your rewards number to get the benefits of your status (lounge, breakfast, etc.) and/or get points for food/beverage spend.
Surprised it’s happening at the W, since it’s Marriott. Hyatt does have a policy where you have to stay AND be the one paying - so when your company prepays, you get nothing.
But that’s Hyatt ... didn’t think Marriott had the same policy.
Policy usually is the one who pays gets the points!
Yeah, it’s always been who pays is who gets the points. I often have the junior staff pay so they get a little extra on points. It’s a free way to increase their motivation considering we all know an ambassador is virtually worthless.

OP - did you get your rewards number added to the reservation ?
@d2 Yes, I did. I definitely got points for when I was flown in for interviews, which I didnt pay for, so this was a surprise to me.
**conference.

If you use an online travel agent that was multiple rate options that are similar /same price, it's good to read the rate code string. Some will say no points, and they're not even necessarily cheaper than the rate that allows for points
