Happens all the time. That’s why you have to align yourself with folks who genuinely appreciate your talents. Diverse lawyers have to be even more careful about who they work with. I wouldn’t be partner today without having taken this approach early in my career.
Partner 1 yes, I've had to do that because I had no choice 😅
Yep. Bias always comes through as constructive criticism. It's never obvious.
First, find out if you really have an issue, or if it's all preconceived bias. E.g. if they complain about your writing, send the unedited brief to somebody who is a writing master (not associated with the firm). Ask for their opinion without giving background on why you're asking. Second, even if you confirm it's bias, ask the partners how you can get better (i.e., coaching, etc.). Take all the writing suggestions, coaching, and "get better." Also, make a diverse partner that you trust aware of what's happening.
Yep, even to the point of lying.
Yup, all the time.

People always say I’m not enthusiastic enough about work that isn’t exciting. And I want to be like… duh?
