Has the technical sales field reached its end? I'm 49 years old and was laid off from my six-figure sales engineer role about a year ago. All this time later, all I'm able to land is a $52,000 entry-level role. I don't know how to encourage myself any longer. Not being able to cosign on a loan for our daughter to go to college has been the biggest hit for me.

Don’t let the cosigning setback define your worth to your daughter. Most of us end up reevaluating what “success” looks like at some point in this business. Your experience still matters, and the right opportunity is often just one referral or conversation away.

The field isn’t dead. It’s changing fast, with higher expectations for technical know-how and digital skills, but strong roles are still out there for people who keep adapting. Getting knocked down for a while doesn’t erase the years of success or skill you’ve built, even if starting over feels unfair. You’ll get your footing back. Networking, picking up new certifications, or even consulting part time can help you bridge the gap and stay sharp.

“Job hopper” and “quiet quitting” are all schemes made up by boomers to make you think everything is the employees fault. When in reality people are just getting out of bad situations. Older companies do whatever they can to pay you the least amount and get the max work out of you. Except our generation will just leave amid we’re being mistreated, not complain for 35 years making 50k and 0 advancement.

I had a job interview for a role that I really want. The hiring manager scheduled me for an interview and did not show up. Emailed me an hour later stating that he got super busy and couldn’t attend, and would like to reschedule. This is a major red flag, but I can’t help but feel that I am missing out since this role pays 50% over what I currently make. Should I let the recruiter know? What’s your take on this?

My company blames my generation for not being able to hire everyday. “You guys don’t want to work” coming from some overweight, racist, old coaster. I’ve barely taken any days off this year and pick up “skeleton crew” days any chance I get. I was able to work out a deal with my company before I came because of prior experience luckily, but they offer a terrible base salary and sham of a commission structure to new hires + no remote. Then sit here and can’t figure out why…
