Have any of y’all tried a meal delivery service like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh for the weekends? I think I want to try cooking but never learned and I think this could be a good way. Thanks 🐠

Good on you. Those will be a great way to get your feet wet.

It’s perfect for that. Gives you a solid way to learn to cook real meals. Not the gimmicky Pinterest or Facebook recipe crap.

I like it for the variety and ability to try new things without feeling like I’m wasting food.

like

Home Chef > Blue Apron > Hello Fresh

like

I’ll have to try Home Chef again based on that. Plated is my favorite right now though.

I don’t like to cook nor do I cook (mostly because I don’t like it). I tried HelloFresh and it actually made me excited to cook my own meals. They were good, quick, and I enjoyed the process.

like

hello fresh recipes can be a little high calorie sometimes but they're pretty wholesome and always delicious. you'll feel like a gourmet chef and all the work that goes into the meal makes it worth it.

OP - My ex and I did Blue Apron because we both love cooking and were very busy. Blue Apron is fresh and great, but much easier to divide and conquer. Definitely helpful to learn techniques, but a lot of food for just one. I did it for almost two years straight. Great way to not have to plan dinner and not waste produce. You should be planning to chop/cook for ~1hr though

like

OP - Absolutely! Maybe not the fish ones, but veggie and meat ones for sure. And the fish was always super fresh, I’m just not a next day fish person. I know some of my friends that were cooking for one would sometimes make half the protein and freeze the rest to have on hand for another time, but for me that would lead to a pile up. I really did think it was very fresh and learned a lot of different techniques. You just have to make sure you stay on top of canceling (I.e skipping a week). It’s super easy and you can plan ahead but I think it’s like a 6 day window.

Have had cumulatively 60+ weeks of meal kits across multiple brands. HelloFresh is absolutely the best one. See link below if you'd like $40 off your first week.

Thanks A1, much appreciated. If I decide to go Hello Fresh I’ll definitely use your code

like

Blue Apron used to massively underestimate the time to prep and cook. Not sure about now though.

like

For HelloFresh: with two people working usually I get the recipes done faster than the time they specify. When I cook solo it does indeed take longer than they say though

blue apron also has free recipes on their website.

like

Martha and Marley spoon’s choices are better than hello fresh IMO

Why don’t you just pick a dish you like, find the first recipe on google, and buy all the ingredients. Even if you buy too much, you’ll probably save money relative to those services, and you’ll get a better eye food shopping as well

I mean there's like a 90+ percent chance I'm going to be pretty happy with my Hellofresh recipe, the percentage is a good bit lower with online recipes. Not looking for a guarantee here but certainly the odds are in my favor 🤷‍♀️
To me 60 bucks a week is totally worth being able to invest seconds per week (literally just selecting your meals each week) into having dinner planned out and on your doorstep ready to be made for the weekend. I think it's totally fine though if you feel differently, we all have different priorities in our life! For me money is not the main driver

I’ve got a toddler and my wife is an accountant (industry), and we only have a few immediate family in the country- but they have health concerns. Busy season was rough, things are looking better now as things return to normal. Still working crazy hours if you count the daycare duties on top of utilization targets.
