Genuinely curious how a consultant is capable of mastering / doing all of those roles as they require completely unique skill sets. Can you explain what clients typically hire you to do and / or what your usual day to day job looks like? Thanks for the info
Totally!
First up: I’m not the youngest (20 years into my career). So my experience has spanned industries and departments which has given me a weird (or unique! Haha) mix of expertise. And typically when in a director level+ role you manage teams and people development while driving strategy and execution.
I’m not a typical consultant (never worked for the big 4). But rather consulting independently with clients directly. I do that between in-house roles because it allows me to interview without the stress of feeling rushed or too dependent on my job search…
My clients hire me for different things depending on their business needs. It’s always unique, skills are the same but I work with small and mid-cap companies across a handful of industries so the work really depends on where they’re at, what their goals are, and what resources they have readily available. Sometimes I’m hired for marketing strategy and planning at an executive level, or to fill a fractional role. Other times it’s brand evolution and implementation. And I’ve had clients who need support assessing their operational processes to strategically adjust so they can scale (non-technical operations, this work is about balancing external growth with capacity — something I have experience with from marketing leadership roles, because you can’t throw money at marketing if the operations won’t be able to keep up with the growth).
My day to day is never the same, so I don’t have a good answer for ya on that front. Just depends on what my client load looks like…
I’d love to hear your feedback on my answer and what feels disparate about these areas of focus/skill sets — would be super helpful to hear while I’m looking for my next FTE role :)
