I'm specifically looking to understand whether McK has a better mentorship culture in comparison to BCG. Because at BCG I feel we are completely lacking on investing time mentoring the new As and Cs.
Can’t speak for McK, but can speak about BCG: Virtually everyone’s busy. As a result, more senior folks often are reactive more than proactive.
If you want mentorship one of two things has to happen 1) You drive it 2) An act of god gets you staffed with a Rockstar A/C who somehow has too much free time during the case.
When I say you drive it I mean you need to tell / ask people for exactly what you need. Be explicit, concise, and persistent. (Learned this the hard way as a new A, and still learning the flip side of it as an APC.)
————————
To be more concrete, here’s some tips to get amazing mentorship. (They’re not comprehensive of being a good A/C, but it is how I would approach getting good mentorship)
Before a case: Tell staffing you want strong people developers.
At the start of a case: Tell your case leadership what you want to work on and what you need from them to improve. (Be super concert, and tangible. Too often our development agreements are pure fluff).
During a case: From both case leaders and senior A/Cs: Ask for time. Ask for input. Ask for honesty. Ask them to tell you if you’re asking for too much time. Do this early and often. If you’re not getting a response, ask again. Remind leadership of the agreed to actions for your development to make sure you’re getting what you need / agreed to.
Around the office: Pick someone you think would be a dope mentor. Ask for time. Ask them to be a mentor. Set up standing time every few weeks. Have an agenda of what you want to discuss or get input on.
In free time: Go to the BCG bowl. Ask questions. Search for posts about being new. Think there was one like “NFI what I’m doing” where there was good advice for crushing it as a new A/C
You’re certainly welcome to stay...but I’m not sure this question or the resulting conversation really belongs in this bowl
I have the same question, I came as an experienced hired and I’m learning the hard way what I should and shouldn’t do, I did had couple of good trainings but is McKinsey actually better mentoring training their people?
I also joined as an experienced hire C in the generalist track, but my experience as BCG has been completely different. I’ve had Principals, Project Leaders and Partners on my cases take a genuine interest in my development since day 1. They’ve provided me with the coaching and support I’ve needed to be successful here, along with my CD advisor and Partners who interviewed me during recruiting. It’s been a great experience!
What region are both of you from and which track? I’m in NAMR, so perhaps things are different in other regions?
