ASK FOR THE JOB. People always forget to ask for the opportunity and tell them why you’ll do a good job.
Confidence. You got the interview so somebody most have seen something they like. Own what you got and make sure you show disposition to learn and grow. Also, do you have any other creative outlet to show your potential? Any side personal projects or stuff like that?
Yep have some side projects along with freelance work I have been doing over the past year since graduation. Also did the animation/ graphic design of all my projects myself as I taught myself through online resources. Currently working with a AD I connected with online but don’t have work ready to put on my book
If they asked you in for an interview then your book is probably good enough. Or they see potential in you as a creative and want to feel that out.
I’ve had plenty of friends who went to W+K that left me scratching my head. Their work was middle of the road, and there were so many other people out there. But they saw potential and wanted to grow their own talent.
Your book is important, but savvy agencies see the person as most important. Be the person they want to hire 🤙🏻
Hmmm even if it’s spec work gotta get that book looking sharp. That’s the biggest error I made... was at an average shop and had a few interviews with the creme of the creme but leant into the fact “the work is average cos the shop is average” — just create a bunch of work that’s amazing and befriend a designer to help you visualize it (pay them if needed).
Granted, I'm a bit biased as a planner, but speak to the strategy behind the work. The consumer is this person, they faced this problem, here was the big idea to solve it, and that could come to life in these ways.
Good work that meets the brand voice and business problem beats out great work that doesn't move the needle.
So how did it go?
