Hey guys! I’m very curious to know what people who don’t have stable jobs do for a living. I have been working in a corporate for a year and a half now and I keep worrying about getting fired. I want to start something of my own. I’m a CPA. I have my MBA as well and I have one year of work experience working in audit in a big 4 accounting firm. Any advice on what I can do to have stable income but also not have to worry so much about a corporation?

I work in PA, but I don’t worry about getting fired because of a few things. First is that I have enough experience that I can provide value to a company or as a service with my own firm (bookkeeping/taxes) and I have 6-12 months of living expenses. I own a home so my biggest monthly expense is fixed unlike rent where it can fluctuate. I also only need $5k/month to live on to support my family if 4 so finding a job that pays me $5k/month is fairly easy. So I think you need to know what your monthly needed income is, 6-12 months of living expense and confidence in your ability to provide value to a company or to your own customers.

My current title is Buyer. I handle the purchasing of the larger categories of direct materials and train any new Buyers. I also manage outsourcing and quoting of raw materials for new business, among other things.

I am looking at taking over capacity planning for manufacturing, while keeping my previous responsibility.

What could I suggest for a new title/promotion? There isn't an existing position that I would be filling, and I want to show career growth on my resume.

Accepting an offer in IBD, lateraling over from consulting. Opportunity of a lifetime for me so don’t want to lose it.
But timing is horrible. I joined the Army Reserves before this opportunity was on my radar. Interviewed over several months, got the offer, but shipping out in 1 month for training for 6 months.
Do I irreversibly shoot my career by joining and immediately going on LoA? I obviously haven’t mentioned it in the interview process. Or will this be forgotten a couple years in?
