Unless you’re using the degree to pivot out of your existing field into something more lucrative, it’s absolutely not worth it. E.g., you did insurance sales for the last 6 years and hate the work, but you’re kind of locked in at this point since if you were to pivot, you’d take a step back in earnings. But if you get your MBA and land a role at MBB starting at $175k, that can certainly be worth it.
With anything, there’s no hard and fast rule about whether you should or shouldn’t. I’d say on average though, you don’t need it to move up vertically in your existing career path.
Thanks for the insight! MBB is not really my target but if it changes than maybe
If it helps: I’m at a very large firm, well known name. We offer educational assistance, but routinely deny MBA applications because it’s not necessary to grow in our field of practice- whereas certifications, CPA licenses, and other similar ed tracks are more appropriate.
But certs are just as hard too which sucks..
I think it’s only worth it if you have some sort of scholarship at a top 5 MBA (Stanford, booth, Harvard) and are using it to pivot to a more lucrative career (IB, MBB consulting, PM for big tech). Otherwise, if you are going to a not top 5 and no scholarship, or are already in one of the roles above, no not worth it
Not against that take but I just find it hard to rationalize that the difference is that incredible
I think people are over-generalizing. Whether it is worth it is a function of your current job income / prospects, reasonable income / prospects as a graduate of the program you are considering and your total out of pocket and opportunity cost for then program. I would generally say that a high brand name / top 10 MBA is very valuable in some fields if you are at the early career stages of those fields. All of the above greatly vary by person so not sure how people can give an answer to this.
Makes sense, thank you for your thoughts!
