If you don’t know, you aren’t ready yet. Start doing NBD at your current firm to build the connections you need.
I should specify. The years shouldn't be the determining factor. The experience you have should. For example you could do the exact same thing every year for 6 years. Then what you really have is one year of experience. Which I'm assuming is unlikely in your case. 6 years is plenty of time to get the experience you need if you are exposed to the right work.
The only way I know how clients are obtained is word of mouth. Word of mouth from existing clients (not applicable here) and colleagues who can’t take on additional work.
I would start getting my business licenses going and post on LinkedIn as an indirect way to spread the word with my past co-workers.

Start small and just get going. Make sure you have your license and whatever you need from the state to have a business. I did tax prep this year and getting clients was difficult. You can focus locally and look into running ads on social media. It’s truly a huge rabbit hole of information.
Starting your own practice is not going to make juggling your work and personal life easier. Maybe you need to work elsewhere?
If you create an accounting account in QuickBooks, it can put you in with a list of other accountants and people can go through and pay you for accounting help.
