You’ll become an expert on regulatory and voluntary reporting requirements, which often determine the metrics that companies used for performance management as well. The EY CCaSS NFRA team seems quite good to the extent I’ve worked with them.
Yes. You’ll learn what corporates are really willing to outsource and pay $$ for, and you’ll learn to quickly navigate the #rapidlyevolvinglandscape of sustainability regulations which is what keeps our clients up at night. It’s less strategy and more compliance, but because it’s now in compliance bucket you get a seat at client tables that was hard to earn before. But- reg compliance (and even aligning with voluntary standards & frameworks) work is not for everyone even the non CPA’s.
If your ultimate goal is to end up in one of those many-hats sustainability program manager positions in industry, I'd say the assurance position will be very helpful. A perennial bullet point for sustainability program managers is knowing how to put together a GHG and ESG data inventory according to best practices and standards, and what goes into that.
The more operational part you may have to pick up elsewhere (procuring renewable energy, running initiatives at facilities, etc.) though.
This would be a great introduction to a wide range of sustainability/esg topics, many don’t venture down the CPA path. I came from
Industry and one strong career advantage that consulting brings is being able to see “behind the scenes” of so many companies. I cant speak for the other firms, but EY offered a great deal of flexibility regarding career direction/area of focus in sustainability.
Some of the Big 4 CCaSS practices have monopoly by their Audit verticals ensuring only CPAs are allowed to sign assurance statements or work on them.. Rubbish as none have engineering background to understand what goes on. Look for a pure play sustainability firm if you want to learn and grow faster
It's still such a new career that there is no defined career path.
I disagree that it’s now, however is very quickly evolving. That just means more opportunities in the future, not less.
