It annoys the shit out of me when âMDsâ who barely practiced or in your husbandâs case pretend to be experts in healthcare. JMSHO
Honestly, I agree with others. His value in the healthcare consulting industry will be worth exponentially more after practicing medicine for a few years. Otherwise heâs just another MBA, but with more debt.
My experience, without significant practice experience, he MD is of limited value
I have no idea what these people are talking about - McKinsey and BCG will eat him right up - they love that dual degree thing and I find it is highly marketable - anyone who can do both med school and MBA is a trouper....
I guess Deloitte 1 is mad he did not get into Med school! Live you life and there is always room on consulting with talent and passion
The amount of $$ he will make as an MD in the long run far exceeds what he will make in consulting. Think about the long term strategy - with AI taking over, there wonât be much need of strategy consultants than the ones with actual patient care/front end experience to make the technology better!
Also, he can be a part of the admin team soon after he finishes his residency.. which will also be a win-win. Just my opinion!
He should come to McKinsey. We have tons of MDs (I usually have 1-2 on my team at any given time). They usually do either pharma and / or hospital work where their experience (even without residency, which is less common here) is valued. Weâve been hiring them for so long that many of the partners I work with are MDs. The only thing to know is that most MDs here come from top medical schools, but there are a few exceptions.
OP. ZS might be a place. 90% healthcare focused. Not many MDs currently but there could be opportunities. Send a burner if you would like to connect
Echo McK1 here to provide counterpoints to the above... there are plenty of opportunities for MD (esp. MD/MBA) to hop in at the post-MBA level at every firm I know of that has healthcare/life sci consulting capabilities. Every firm I spoke to with a healthcare arm expressed interest. Only hang up is the timing of his graduation, which might limit some of his options. Source: Iâm an MD hire who had various options for consulting firms.
Look at Navigant and McKinsey. I am working with a provider client and McK did all the strategy work. The report was written by several partners who were MDs
Is he not really not interested in patient care?
Plenty of MD/MBAs in consulting. Lots of opportunities within various areas in healthcare
Yep - also have many MDs on my Pharma/biotech engagements. Should be an easy pivot
Heâs not a real MD until heâs practiced and you put him in a client meeting with other MDs and it would be apparent by a simple question... where did you practice
He's obviously super smart, he can do anything. Don't super impose ceilings. Take over the world. Maybe even do a Med focused start up, he has the story of a founder.
ZS would be a great place, but I do not think that the MD/MBA offers an increase in comp over a plain MBA
Navigant would take a look at him for sure
Do some firms value having an MD more than others? He has a few interviews already, but looking for some boutique firms to apply to as well. He is interested in healthcare, life sciences, or management consulting. Any suggestions?
Nope, not at all. Hated med school but loved the MBA
Agree with others. Weâd love to have someone like him that has clinical experience.. but.. otherwise, it really isnât very useful
