Background:
I’ve had a couple not great reviews and I feel like they are overall unhappy with my performance. I feel like they contradict themselves when they are giving me direction.

In our 121 last we had a good discussion on creating a personal development plan, with the idea being I’d write down clear goals & action points to get from my current level to the next, and I’d provide weekly evidence of it. I prepped the doc accordingly, but instead of wanting to discuss it, he said I have 4 weeks to “turn things around” - without giving any new info on what I’ve done wrong - esp given I wrote my goals based on this same feedback from last week??

How do you deal with a manager who expects 3 months of work overnight? I have tried structuring , creating a plan to show him how the activities are being executed. However, he seems to be someone who turns around every other hour to ask ‘Is it done’? I am usually pretty good at managing expectations but having a hard time conveying how unreasonable he is being. Originally from Italy, I've been out to anyone at my former jobs in Europe without ever worrying about the reactions of my coworkers. Now I'm Asia and just started a new job, but one of my colleagues (also an expat) made a very weird statement about gay people having more chances of developing cancers (?!?!?), so I feel a bit skeptical about talking about my private life... The problem is that anybody else seems to be so welcoming and open-minded, except for this one guy. Any advices?

As a manager, how do you expect your employee to deal with a diffcult customer?

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.

At this point, I’m looking forward to telling opposing counsel in this one case that I’m leaving my firm more than telling my firm. Between the ridiculous theory of the case, the truly obnoxious discovery requests, and the self-righteous attitude, I can’t wait to never talk to this guy again.

Former client( filed a bar grievance that was dismissed, sent me a demand letter that an attorney responded to on my behalf, and filed a BBB complaint against my non-BBB law firm) has now pro se filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. Seeking ideas for boosting morale in an office. What activities or rituals do you implement that are appreciated by your staff? We do lunch almost once a month and even that feels forced. Some staff don’t interact with others because they are just introverted (not for any other reason). The team seems to open up when we play ice breaker questions but I’m losing my creativity with interesting questions. Looking for more ideas.
