Hi!
My current sales/PM role at a small tech mfg firm is partially commission based. I "earn" $ when I close a deal, but am not paid until the customer's payments come in. I am up for a promotion to start managing a new business unit but have ~$90k of "earned but unpaid" commission on my active projects still pending over the next two years. In my new role's salary/commission negotiations, how much can I base my logic on this $90k that they would pay me if I stayed in current role?

Wow, that is a lot of money to just be waiting on for that long. Do you mean if you get promoted you no longer get that commission? I would think because you earned it before you were promoted that it would still be paid out to you.

They're government research projects that usually last 2 years and have milestone-based payments. Once those milestone payments are received, I get my commission. I've built out a calendar of expected payments on all of my projects over the next 2 years and it totals to ~$90k. I guess you could argue that I haven't fully "earned" all of that yet since it is also contingent on the execution of the work to the client's satisfaction? But yes, either way, it's a significant amount of money that I don't want to lose. And it's likely that my new role will have a differently structured incentive-comp plan. I basically want to say "Make my new base salary = my old base salary + this commission you're already going to pay me". But my boss is adverse to high base salaries. He believes strongly in incentivizing performance.

90k seems low for a PM

As commission for a project manager? This is on top of my base salary. And yeah it probably is low.. I work for a less-than-ideally-funded startup... I do have quite a few stock options though.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Anybody know salary range for VP Operations for GS in SLC?

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
