It really is such a frustrating concept. 8 hours turned into 8 and half or 9 even. Never mind the commute time. Does anybody feel like they live at work and just visit home? I really don’t like it.
I guess if you're in a 24-hour business, it's easier for the company to split the day evenly into three 8-hour shifts. It sounds good in theory but I have yet to meet a nurse or doctor who's ever worked only an 8-hour day. Hand-over reporting usually takes place at the beginning of the new shift which means that the staff finishing their shift are given no choice about leaving on time - it's mandatory to take part in the hand-over. I grew up with a surgeon father and it's almost hysterical to me when I try to envision him working an 8-hour day. For the first five years of my life I really had no idea who he was until I started playing with a little girl my age on our street. There was a man around their home that she had breakfast with every day, and who came home long enough before supper to take her to the playground or the swimming pool. I heard her calling him "Daddy" a few times and it finally "clicked" for me that the man in my house who was gone to work before I got up in the mornings and seldom arrived home in time to eat supper with us, was actually my "Daddy".
My shift is 8:30-5 but I’m typically there before 8 and don’t leave until after 5:30. Only get a 30min unpaid lunch break.
I agree. We are 8-5 with an unpaid hour in the middle of the day which is typically not even taken.
Seriously? An "unpaid" hour break? Not only are they cheapskates, they must be operating close to illegally.
Seriously. How did things get to this point?
The labor movement stopped too soon, we really need advocates to help protect us from the people on top who are prioritizing the bottom line over employee burnout and job satisfaction...

I switched from 3 12s to working M-F 8-5...and the other day in the way home I thought about how much more I'm really working. I get 1 hour unpaid lunch but rarely get to take it ...I have to leave for work only 1 hours later than I did previously and I'm only home 1, hours earlier. The difference in the traffic pattern turned my commute from 26 minutes to sometimes over an hour. It's sold to us as 40 hours...but it's more than that. I'd go to weekends because they do 12s but our weekend crew really gets the short stick they have terrible clock in rules and only get 30 minutes for lunch.
I had a vacation at the end of the year. Barely had any uninterrupted lunch. 30 min? Ha! But I worked 37 hours in 4 days! I’m salaried. So I don’t get paid for lunch. I dont get paid for extra time
OMG can you please say it louder for the ones in the back. I have literally been saying this for YEARS. Because what really drives me nuts is when I ask if I can just leave an hour early and get told no. I don't see why that is an issue if I don't want to take a lunch.
