Come to Nevada! We had to hire 8 out of the country teachers this year just at my school. We are hundreds of teachers short. We have several people teaching at the school who aren't trained teachers. No state income tax!
We are always short. When teachers are out due to illness we have to combine classrooms. Our district leaders will not raise the rate to pay substitutes and they are going to other districts where the pay is higher.
Not only are we short teachers but also aides for teachers. Their pay is even worse and we are recruiting parents, grandparents or community members. You would think this would be a great way to involve the community, but they lack the knowledge and training necessary (it is not provided by the district). It also increases the amount of gossip spread around the community about children and families in the school area (they see things and share with others).
Teachers are inundated with extra work, new curriculum, and new requirements due to the passing of laws by our state’s government officials that have NEVER experienced teaching or the inside of a classroom.
I will miss my students, and the joy that WAS teaching.
I begin a new endeavor with higher education this summer.
I will gladly give up my summer for less stress and better mental health. I have seen too many teachers almost reach retirement and find out they have cancer, an incurable disease, or have a heart attack or stroke.
I’m sending my love and wishing the best of luck for all of those I am leaving behind.

I worked at a district last year where 40% of the classrooms were filled with subs or teachers on emergency permits while they got certified (so, subs under another name, but at 1st-year teacher pay).
We're fully staffed where I am now.
Amazing what a difference pay scale and working conditions make.

Admin was as much or more of the problem at the old district. Not just pay. Teacher pay sucked, but usually, you don't start looking at other jobs and realize you're being paid poorly unless you're unhappy at work.
Wasn't building admin, either. District-level. Unprofessional, incompetent, and malicious. Building-level admin tried to shield staff from the worst of it and got fired for their trouble.
I work somewhere where we actually have too many teachers and schools are closing. It's pretty crazy. We used to have a really large student population but our projections for student body numbers are abysmal, so they're shutting down tons of schools and laying off teachers left and right.
I'm in the Seattle area, that's happening here too, due to budget shortfalls. 🥵
We don’t have a shortage in southern CA.. no layoffs in my district if anything we have more than we need… so layoffs woujd make sense but they are creating jobs for them now.
I’m in a small district in southern California and they are cutting a few teachers due to budget. The state budget is a mess
It depends on what subject you teach. Certified math and science teachers are short; history, not so much. English is a mixed bag depending on what grade level and school.
I’m in a Hampton Roads (Virginia) district.
I honestly wonder if there is a teacher shortage. There are plenty of is to go around but in so many places, people have to leave the profession to make a living. They wanted to be teachers, but just could not make it due to horrible pay. Or choose something else because of work conditions. There are competent people who just don’t want to fight the system anymore.
Our district cut sub pay. So there was that exceptionally bright move! In addition, we are super admin heavy. So a 3% raise for an hourly employee making $12 an hour is way, way different than an admin position making 200K with that same 3% raise. It is demoralizing. p
