How do embedded firmware people stay touch with the current events (india specific)? The IT crowd are very active and progressive in terms of keeping touch with current events, salary negotiations and insights, knowing market value and defining career path.

All indian spaces which are specifically for embedded are inactive just like this space.

So I don't know my market value honestly. Currently getting 5.5lpa with 2yoe inhand but I'm so depressed because I don't see a clear career path and dont know the salary norms. It is also difficult because my background is not engineering and have no contact with other experienced industry people who can guide me.

like

Thanks for replying. This is an start up btw. Also I've noticed (talking to strangers over internet) few companies do provide 5.5lpa or more.

Mind if I know or DM what is approximately your current yoe and ctc?

The problem with this industry is that firmware development contributions are not recognized much. There are a lot of companies that are developing hardware based products and they hire firmware developers for very low salaries.

In my opinion, a firmware engineer's role is as important as a full-stack developer. I understand the frustration you face for researching salary packages and tools, because people in India are more focussed on AI,ML, DS than IoT soultions as sw is easier to sell than hardware and also companies do not want to spend a lot of money into R&D. Only good hardware startups will want to invest into R&D and resources.

As for negotiating salary, your worth depends on your skills. Try to upskill as much as you can. The more broad field of skillset you have in embedded, the more you can demand from companies. Follow this channel called "Embedded Systems In Pyjama" there are a bunch of embedded engineers from google helping out engineers and students pursuing embedded systems.

Well firstly you can research here about the salaries of the companies you apply for and the next thing you can do is keep a number in mind based on your current CTC and skills you bring. If you have led the development solely then that can also be a factor in your negotiations.

I have almost 2.5 yoe and i've shifted companies twice now and both times my packages were above the avg salary range listed here on glassdoor and ambition box. Sadly there is no higher range of numbers to refer and talk about in salary negotiations so your current CTC and skills are what you got to use to gain an advantage.

Currently a staff in audit - 6 months in. Glad to be learning a lot, and have had a generally positive experience at the firm other than a few interactions, some tough busy season nights. Really been intrigued by TAS/M&A, however, and had a few convos with a senior in TAS i know at the firm. It’s closer to what I studied, but don’t know how to make the jump as it seems an internal transfer could take 6+months/senior rank and a lot of convincing. Is it better to jump firms/has anyone done this?

Should I just cancel one of them? Or should I at least put both on the table and see what they say? They're going to hire me either way, but I wonder if it's a bad start to ask for both.
